Melissa Waddell studied visual art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She currently lives and works in the Pacific Northwest.
“Painting and drawing are my tools of choice to explore the complexity of the world around me. I am attracted by things I’ve seen over and over again, finding that with time, the simplest of subjects reveals rhythms of form and colour that fascinate me. So starts a picture.
There is a deeply contemplative quality to my painting. While I stare at and examine my subject, I learn more about it, move closer to it, and know also that its essential nature remains a mystery. The practice of painting becomes a meditation. It is my hope that something of this experience remains in the picture after my time with it has ended, that the meditation is shared with the viewer.”
